Overview
In this short training module, we will be looking at the use of 4 precise literacy development strategies and techniques that can be used by any teacher or instructional support professional to assist English Learners with literacy development in the K-1 classroom.

Prerequisites
This module is developed for those who are working directly with English Learners in the K-1 setting. So if you are a teacher, instructional aide, mentor, or program aide interested in helping students with their reading comprehension and vocabulary development, these strategies and techniques are for you!

Objectives
Participants in this training module will be asked to familiarize themselves with the following strategies to the degree that they can readily integrate them into practice:
  1. Choral Response
  2. Explicit Teaching of Academic Language
  3. Realia
  4. Multi-Level Response

How to Take this Unit
Participants will demonstrate their understanding of the above 4 strategies by
  • engaging in and completing "in-course" activities (i.e. online discussion, video analysis, keeping a professional journal, etc)
  • developing lessons from their curriculum in which they have appropriately and effectively integrated two or more of these strategies.
  • selecting one of the lessons for observation by a mentor, coach, resource teacher, and/or administrator

Unit Duration
This module should take approximately 10 hours to complete
(3 hours to review strategies and video case studies, 2 hours to complete in-course activities, and 5 hours to complete and teach a lesson plan for a classroom observation).
