Welcome to Unit 4.1 Let's Go to Vegas!
The motivating CAHSEE problem for this unit is:
Mr. Gulati is holding five cards numbered 1 through 5. He has asked five students to each randomly pick a card to see who goes first in a game. Whoever picks the card numbered 5 goes first. Juanita picks first, gets the card numbered 4, and keeps the card. What is the probability that Yoko will get the card numbered 5 if she picks second?
- A. 1/2
- B. 1/3
- C. 1/4
- D. 1/5
Major California Content Standards addressed in this unit include:
Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability (6th): 3.5: Students understand the difference between independent and dependent events.
In Unit 4.1 Let's Go to Vegas!, you will
- Deepen your understanding of mathematical concepts, including:
- Developing understanding of probability; and
- Comparing independent and dependent events.
- Develop skills in new instructional strategies, including
Co-teaching by mathematics and special education teachers;
Modifying instruction to engage and support special education students; and
Stepping into math concepts with careful transition from non-math to mathematical representations.
- Apply your new skills in a Lesson Plan Project.
What you will see:
- This unit is organized around a highly-missed question from the California High School Exit Examination
- The unit presents a lesson co-taught by a pair of middle school teachers.
- These teachers designed the lessons with input from Dr. Harris Shultz.
- You will work through two separate strands on math content and instructional strategies.
What you will do:
- As you move through the unit, you will read text, view videoclips of classroom teaching, and respond to reflection and assessment questions.
- You will submit your responses to the assessment questions as you move through the unit.
- Once you submit a response, comments from Drs. Shultz and Costa will "pop-up" for your viewing.
In addition, your Online Facilitator will be checking your responses for accuracy and completion. - At the end of each strand, you will be asked to post your reflection on the Discussion Board. You will also respond to a colleague's posting.
- At the end of the unit, you will also be asked to reflect on the entire learning experience.
- At the end of each unit, you also apply what you've learned to a lesson plan project.
Unit 4.1 Let's Go to Vegas! should take approximately 10-15 hours, depending on your technology skills and knowledge of instructional strategies. You may complete this unit on your own time, but each strand is expected to be completed by a specific deadline. This will allow your Online Facilitator to provide collective support and will facilitate your collaboration with your colleagues. It will also insure that you complete the unit by the course endpoint.
